Global patent agent in VA branch office is seeking a Patent Agent to join our team and support high‑value U.S. patent prosecution work. The core responsibilities will be PA (Patent Assistant) work, but the person will also be expected to handle administrative tasks, clerical duties, coordination, and ad-hoc assignments. Experience working at a patent law firm is required. (candidates with experience only in in-house corporate IP departments will be given lower priority).
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with cutting‑edge technologies, including significant innovations from Japanese auto industry related companies.
You will play a key role in drafting, filing, and prosecuting U.S. patent applications, collaborating with clients and USPTO examiners, and contributing to strategic IP protection efforts.
Title: Patent Agent
Location: Arlington, VA (Hybrid/Remote Eligible)
For the first six months after joining, the role will be primarily office-based.
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Compensation: $120,000–$140,000

Key Responsibilities
Prepare and review patent specifications for filing with the USPTO
Manage all aspects of U.S. patent prosecution, including online filings, office‑action responses, examiner interviews, registration procedures, and maintenance fee matters
Participate in USPTO interviews and work collaboratively with clients to resolve issues
Provide a wide range of administrative and prosecution support as directed by supervising attorneys

Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of hands‑on experience as a Patent Agent in a patent law firm
Bachelor’s degree or higher
Native‑level English proficiency
Japanese language ability is a plus, but not required
Occasional short business trips to Japan (approximately once every three years)
Flexible to take administrative tasks
